Age of Succession, 7217 IC
Month of the Cherry Blossom
First Day of Spring
Third Hour of the Morning
Chilly with Clearing Skies (everything is damp from last night's rain)
Finally, the New Year's celebrations are dying away in the streets outside. Occasionally, a loud crack of fireworks will echo through the city, or there will be a group of drunken revelers that will pass by -- probably on their way to collapse somewhere -- but mostly, Kasai has decided that there has been enough revelry for one night. More and more of the citizens are falling off to sleep after an exhausting festival.
Gakusei sits at his usual table, nursing his drink for nearly its fourth hour. It was cold long ago. He has found he must make the simple things in life last longer than he once did. But that is wise, and it has taught him something of temperance. He has enjoyed watching the celebration from his lonely corner. There was a time, only a few short years ago, that such an event would be forbidden by the strict curfews set down by the Jade Regent. When the Amatatsu Empress threw him down off the throne, that was a blessed day.
So, the people of Kasai are free to drink and sing and debauch all they wish, particularly here in The Reeds, where there is plentiful debauchery on any night. And there is little to worry about of trouble. Years ago, there was no crime because the Jade Regent controlled the city with an iron fist. Under the new regime, there is little need for much policing on the outskirts. The Hitsugi Gumi keep things running smoothly, because trouble is bad for business. All is pretty much as it should be.
But, as soon as the old man thinks this to himself, there is loud, obnoxious laughter heard outside. There is a sound of breaking glass, and the front door to the teahouse swings violently open. Three men stumble into the teahouse, clearly drunk. From the size of them, they look to be common laborers of some kind -- their manners are too brutish to be bred from the warrior caste.
One of them flops back first onto the nearest table, laughing uncontrollably. The second has an oversized mask of red-painted papier mache -- probably pulled off of some festival decoration. He hangs it on his head where it tips at a ridiculous angle due to it being so huge. It depicts an outlandish demonic face grimacing in a frightful leer. It is difficult to find it intimidating, however, when the man wearing it is such an inebriated clown. He tries to pour a bottle of alcohol into the mask's mouth, but the drink just spills out all over the floor. This makes the first man laugh harder.
The third fellow immediately begins bellowing and slamming his fist down on the polished counter. He is calling for a paramour, presumably. The proprietor's daughter, no doubt. A pretty thing, but much too young for this idiot.
"Now here's a group which has embraced their revelry a bit too much for my taste" Gakusei says out loud to himself. Glancing down at his now cold tea. He decided to warm it with another children's spell (Prestidigitation) and take a sip before rising from his seat.
ReplyDeleteOld habits die hard, as he finds a familiar gesture of Detect Magic wander off his hands along with the soft words before stepping within earshot of the crowd. Smiling, he leans on the nearby table and see this oaf clamoring loudly for his drink and 'his entertainment'.
'Perhaps it is not too late for a little game with these children before retiring? I see a teachable moment in the works for moderation'. He Pauses briefly and laughs aloud at his own inner monologue. Now voicing aloud, "Moderation? My the years have changed me."
Softly and discreetly Gakusei points at the beer between two of the young men clamoring at the table and casts another parlor trick, Mage Hand. Unable to control a smile, Gakusei quickly, yet to the likely surprise of both men, floats the drink away from the first one already served and towards the open hand of the boisterous other.
"My, I do love it when problems solve themselves." As a large smile draws itself over his weary skin. Lets see if my little ruse tires them out on each other.
(OOC:
Some rolls which might be relevant, I doubt all will be:
Detect Magic Spellcraft: 6 + 11 = 17
Ranged Touch on unattended Beer Mug (if needed): 11 + 1 = 12
Bluff for semantic components if anyone is watching: 7 + 4 = 11
Sense motive (in case of an impending brawl) 11 + 3 = 14
Perception (Because, well perception!) 14 + 3 = 17
Basically with the low perception drunkards, I'll see if some cantrips can cause them to focus on each other and leave the other tea shop patrons and the lady at peace. If its ineffective I'll step up the light show or perhaps talk to them in person.
)
At this late hour there are no other patrons in the Dancing Kappa, and perhaps that is for the best. The men become louder and more offensive.
ReplyDeleteGakusei steps forward, having seen many blowhards such as this over the years, and begins to toy with them a bit with a sampling of his more simple spells. With no appropriate unattended object in view (besides some of the proprietor's furnishings), the wizard instead gives a good tug on the bottle in the masked fool's hand.
It is enough to yank it loose from his unexpecting hand. The bottle tumbles end over end from his grasp, and spills wildly when he tries in vain to reacquire it in mid-air. As it crashes to the floor, the fellow on the table gets splattered. His laughter ceases suddenly, and he shouts, "hey, watch it! You clumsy idiot! I don't want to smell like that piss you drink!" He starts to snicker at his jab, but then notices Gakusei nearby.
The man springs off the table and says, "what are you laughing at, old man? Isn't it past your bedtime?"
At nearly the same moment, the owner of the teahouse appears from a side door. He is trying to keep someone else from emerging into the main chamber with him. He squeezes through, and does his best to slide the door closed behind him.
"Don't bring trouble here, Junzo," the proprietor says, trying to keep his composure. "You can come back at a sensible hour when you've slept off that drink. Until then, please leave."
"I'm not here to see you," replies the third man, the one who had been pounding on the counter. "And I'm not here for your advice. I'm here for Kuki, and it looks to me like she wants to see me, too."
Still flustered, the owner summons up some coursge and shouts back, "that is impossible! And disrespecting me and my home will not get you to see her any faster! Now, leave, before I must..."
"Must what? There's nothing you can do to me, and you know it!"
The other two drunkards have turned their attention away from Gakusei for the moment. They now stand to either side of Junzo, the largest of them removing the clumsy yet fearsome mask.
It seems my subterfuge needs a little work still, Gakusei thought to himself. Lets try something else.
ReplyDelete"Just a moment there young man" Gakusei addressed to the last drunkard paying him attention still. "you look familiar..."
Opening his spellbook on the table, Gakusei quickly searched for the spell he had forgotten. "I know it is from the discipline of metal, with a gesture like..., aha!" he muttered under his breath as he noticed the page with Charm Person. Six seconds later he was ready with plan B.
OOC: Quick study, spending 1 arcane reservoir to replace Summon Monster 1 with Charm Person. Full round action with AoO, hopefully that won't be an issue!
BIC:
"My old friend, it is good to see you again! Do you not remember old Kyosho?"
Gakusei finishes the last swift gestures for Charm Person. (Will DC: 17)
(Assuming it was successful:)
"What are you doing here my friend? Do you not remember the great light shows I provided in new years past? Come, bring your friends and I'll show you a new one I have been working on! I'd be glad to show an old friend such a display."
(Bluff: 15 + 4 = 19)
The man who had been laughing uncontrollably is the samllest of the three, but still the only one who pays Gakusei much mind. The other two are more occupied trying to intimidate the proprietor of the teahouse.
ReplyDeleteThe thug does nothing to inhibit the old man's casting. More than likely, he has not seen much of magic (except perhaps a petty street magician), and he simply looks on incredulously. He laughs and points at the wizard, "hey! Look at this one! He's going to burn us all to a crisp with dragon fire, watch!"
The other two are walking around either side of the counter now, approaching the owner on his left and right. The proprietor, meanwhile, searches for a makeshift weapon with one hand while keeping the door to the adjoining room closed with the other.
Suddenly, the laughing man opens his eyes wide and turns to his companions saying, "Junzo! Ogre-face! It's Kyosho! Don't you remember?" It is clear from the look on his face and the uncertainty in his voice that he himself does not remember anyone of that name, but he does not wish to appear rude. "He's the man who put on those fantastic light shows -- it must have been years ago -- how long has it been, Kyosho? Can you put on your show again? I can barely remember what they were like." The laughing man has left his comrades and joined Gakusei closer to the center of the main room.
The two thugs are ignoring their friend for now, however, despite the calls for their attention. They loom menacingly over the quivering store owner.
Gakusei's hopes of resolving this conflict without bloodshed seem to be dwindling now. He thinks to himself, 'If I could only remember how, I would turn all these buffoons into toads this instant! How can I stop them with only these children's spells?'
ReplyDelete"My friend, it has been many years since my fabulous light shows, however it looks like your friend Junzo is about to hurt my good friend who owns the Dancing Kappa. Lets see if we can talk them into a drink outside with my fireworks instead eh? My treat!"
Gakusei brings his new friend over to the other two thugs now cornering the proprietor. With their backs turned to him, he casts another Charm Person, this time on Junzo. (Will DC: 17)
"Gentlemen! Happy new year! I was just talking to this fine young man and I'd like to show you my new fireworks show I've been working on for an old friend. It is spectacular! Let this old man show you what he's learned in his travels, come with me outside and bring those drinks."
Diplomacy: 9 + 3 = 12 (Maybe situational bonus?:D)
Gakusei moves to position himself between the thugs and stands next to the owner of the Dancing Kappa.
(OOC: Ready action to defensively cast Magic Missile at someone who takes a swing at me or him.)
The laughing man still seems excited about the prospect of seeing a wizardly light show, and lets his companions know as much. Junzo, distracted and clearly annoyed, turns to the man and shouts, "what is wrong with you? Stop acting like an idiot!"
ReplyDeleteIt is then that the leader of the thugs notices Gakusei and his fluid gesturing. When the old wizard attempts the same spell on Junzo, however, the target simply blinks his eyes and shakes his head. "What the hell did you just do to me, old man?" He motions to the largest of the three (Ogre-face?) and tells him to deal with the owner.
Then Junzo leaps over the counter, shoves the laughing man aside, and moves menacingly towards Gakusei. Offers of fireworks or a drink fall on deaf ears. "I'll give you a show!" Junzo threatens. He rolls up his sleeves revealing elaborate tattoos covering his forearm.
It seems I am out of options, Gakuesei thinks to himself.
ReplyDeleteGlancing over at my only charmed thug, Gakusei shouts imploringly "My friend, he's going to hurt this old man. Help my frail bones!"
(OOC: Assuming he actually like Junzo and doesn't want to hurt him, opposed charisma check: 1 + 3 = 4. Well crap)
BIC:
A brief step backwards out of reach leads into a fluid motion of another familiar children's spell. This one now has some teeth.
(OOC: 5 foot step backwards into Magic Missile directed at Junzo. If he resisted my Charm person without a amazing roll this may be a very brief lived character of mine!
Assuming combat now begins, initiative: 18+0 = 18, If I act first, movement of 30 feet away and to prevent a straight-line charge attack from any of the thugs, and then a second magic missle at Junzo.)
(Forgot my roll for magic missile: 3+1 = 4 damage. and then 1+1 = 2 damage)
ReplyDeleteThe laughing man -- who is no longer laughing -- tries to intercept Junzo, but he does so half-heartedly. While he may not wish to see the old man harmed, he clearly fears the leader of the thugs. However, he does delay Junzo long enough for Gakusei to backpedal while weaving a more unsubtle spell.
ReplyDeleteAs Junzo throws his flunkie out of the way, a tiny comet of jade energy streaks out of Gakusei's fingertips. It flies so quickly, the thug has no time to react. There is an explosion of brilliant sparks as the missile impacts upon his sternum. Junzo grunts and reels back a bit, but then raises his face, contorted in anger. "You'll need more witchery than that to deal with me, old man... now you die!"
Hojo pushes his way into the doorway and stands on the threshold. He had grown accustomed to seeing fireworks out in the streets, but not inside teahouses. When he saw the brilliant green flash, the samurai immediately came to investigate.
ReplyDeleteInside the common room there is a chaotic scene. To Hojo's left, there is a huge, ugly man behind a counter who has a small, middle-aged man held roughly by the collar. On the counter nearby is a large plaster mask of a leering red-faced demon.
Opposite this, to Hojo's right, is a smaller man sprawled on the floor. There is an overturned chair next to him and a table that has recently flipped and spilled a mess onto the ground.
Furthest away, but directly ahead, is another man who is striding towards an elderly fellow in long robes. In fact, he is nearly on top of the white-bearded man. One fist is tightly clenched while the other reaches for the unfortunate victim.
"WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON IN HERE!" bellows Hojo (OOC: Intimidate 9+5+2[parade armor] = 16). "Cease this mongering and explain yourself or feel the taste of my blade!"
ReplyDeleteOOC: So my weapon is rather large, any penalty for wielding it in the teahouse? If the cieling is high enough (I suspect I've trained in these types of conditions to at least some degree), I'll ready an action to draw my Nodachi should anyone approach by putting hand to blade and sheath, displaying the weapon clearly. If the quarters are a bit too tight, my action will be to maneuver them through the door behind me, preferably by throwing them.
Gakusei's worried expression quickly relaxes back to his usual genial self having recognized the powerful samurai who has entered.
ReplyDelete(OOC: If I can see his face, there's a good chance I know that it is Hojo from knowledge:nobility. If this is true, I'll appear to be even more relaxed, but I won't address him by name still)
BIC:
"Ah, thank you, armored big-sword man. Good to know that their lessen will not be lost today!"
He leans back, crosses his arms, smiles, and projects an air of contentment with the look of a professor watching his students fail an exam they choose to not prepare for.
Gakusei is relieved to have some help under these dire circumstances. Junzo certainly does not seem cowed in the least, but if nothing else, he has shifted his attention towards the entrance. "Be careful, boy," says the tattooed man. "You are in The Reeds now. There is a different law here." When the old man speaks of lessons, Junzo retorts over his shoulder, "I am not done with you, old fool..."
ReplyDeleteThe large fellow behind the counter throws the proprietor of the teahouse to the ground and the owner scuttles away on all fours. When someone tries to emerge through the side door, Ogreface elbows it shut. The third man (who had been on the floor) springs to his feet. For a moment, it seems the young samurai is outnumbered and surrounded, but then a small shape darts around Hojo and loops to the right around the overturned furniture. This swift figure -- Takeru -- pulls out a sap, but Laughing Man spins to face him before he can move alongside the inked Junzo.
OOC: I'd prefer, as a general rule, for players to state their desired actions rather than describe the as yet undetermined results of them. I greatly appreciate the dramatic language, but we mustn't get ahead of ourselves.
"Words are cheap, and you are bullying shop owners and old men while my family fights and dies to protect this land. You enjoy your celebrations in this drunken stupor because of us. Perhaps you wish to test stronger steel? If you are half the man you pretend to be, step outside and face me to the death."
ReplyDeleteOOC: This has turned into a bit of a diplomacy check, I think? (diplomacy: 18+5+2=25 to get him to come outside and fight). This also seems like a good time to roll initiative, assuming he is to cowardly to step outside (initiative: 9+3=12). I'd prefer this to not be part of the challenge ability, but playing the young and inexperienced samurai, it probably would be. Therefore, I get +2 damage against Junzo, and Ogreface and Laughing Man get +2 to hit me (in the form of a -2 AC from everyone other than Junzo). I also get 1/- DR from damage from Junzo.
"Ha!" replies Junzo. "I thought you samurai were honorable! Take off your armor and throw down your sword, and we will see who is truly stronger."
ReplyDeleteThe room has enough tension to cut with a knife. The proprietor takes the opportunity -- with Ogreface distracted -- to scuttle across the floor behind the counter and disappear through the doorway. Laughing Man does not seem as interested in combat as the other two, but he does pull out a small blade.
Junzo waits for Hojo to make a move, but Ogreface slowly moves in the samurai's direction. Nobody seems to be paying attention to the old man.
OOC: It's is a good time for a Challenge, Hojo, but this is beyond Diplomacy. It's more of a Intimidate situation, if you chose to go that direction.
Takeru -- If you wish to change your action, feel free to do so now that you have a clearer picture of the situation.
OOC: I started with intimidate, seems I got through to the laughing man a little. Didn't do much for the others, so I went the 'honor me because my family dies for your freedom' patriot route. Now sounds like the perfect time for the insults to roll out ;)
ReplyDeleteBIC: "What can you speak of honor? You are acting as a common street thug, preying on the weak and elderly. Is this an act to inflate your ego? Make you seem better stronger than you actually are? I'm offering you a chance to prove yourself with steel like a true warrior, not a chance to beat each other like wild animals."
OOC: I am pretty focused on Junzo, but hopefully my training has allowed me to notice the progression of Ogreface (OOC: Hopefully I don't need a perception roll, because I rolled 2+0=2). If I do notice his movement, then I'll slowly draw my Nodachi while looking at Ogreface and simply say: "wait your turn". Intimidate check to enrage Junzo and convince him to engage me: 6+5+2(parade)=13, and possibly second check on Ogreface (if needed): 9+5+2(parade)=16. Not loving my rolls this morning...
Takeru takes a Withdraw back to G12, for all intents playing the peasent that has stumbled into the wrong part of town.
ReplyDeleteGakusei casts Message with a single pointed finger and points at the laughing man (who should still be under his Charm Person) and whispers, "My friend, lets leave these two to their duel. Come and I'll buy us a drink at the next tea house. They have much finer ale."
ReplyDelete(DC to overhear my Message whisper: 25 perception)
Turning to the Ogre faced one, Gakusei casts one of his last remaining children's spell of Charm Person.
"You're welcome to join us my friend! Lets leave these two to their honorable duel, and I'll buy us some ales to celebrate next door. I even have some rare spices to add which will really knock you off your chair! Come try!"
(Will DC for Charm Person: 17)
(OOC: I'd like to try to maneuver my charmed friends away from the battle as much as possible, and to not be involved. I don't think I could convince them to fight with us against Junzo without a good Charisma DC, so I'd rather convince them to wait and not fight. If this does go against their nature we can do opposed Charisma checks.)
OOC (Forgot to add: Based on the map, I would have selected both OgreFace and Laughing man to be targets in my Message spell. This way they are informed and targeted without Junzo noticing who should be focused on Hojo. I'm assuming with Junzo's back turned to me, casting Message and Charm Person should be done without troubles. Without spellcraft it probably doesn't look like much more than pointing and a nervous old man twitch :)
ReplyDeleteTakeru backs timidly away, waiting to see how things develop. Gakusei, however, is very busy along the rear wall. Junzo has his back to the old man, and continues to trade verbal jabs with the samurai.
ReplyDelete"The old man decided to cast some of his sorcery on me, but it didn't go the way he hoped. If he hadn't stuck his nose in my business, he wouldn't need to worry about a beating. And now here's another nose, sticking itself where it don't belong!"
Ogreface seems rather befuddled when he begins to hear whispering from across the room. He looks around momentarily trying to find the source of the voice, but once he does, he turns back to Hojo. "Maybe later, white-beard... first I'm gonna knock a chair off him!" The hulking dimwit then scoops up a chair from beneath the nearest table and raises it up with one hand.
Laughing Man simply says, "can't leave the boys... but maybe you can use one of your tricks on them?" Their loyalty to Junzo seems at least as strong as the charm Gakusei has placed upon them.
Junzo takes another step forward then chuckles. "Well, we have a stand-off, samurai! You don't have the guts to drop your sword and face me on equal terms, and we're not fools enough to face a swordsman unarmed... so what's your next move?"
OOC: I assume I didn't notice Ogreface's initial action and did not draw my sword. Hopefully I notice him reaching for a chair. What would be the rules for me to essentially charge at him (if he is clear of the table, or it becomes a move action) and shove him over the bar to remove him from combat (temporarily)? I'm guessing he'll get an AoO and I'll find a chair crashing down on top of me...but would that be a grapple check with a move over the bar, or more of a bull rush? With any luck I'd be able to get there as he's lifting the chair and it will fall harmlessly on my back as he is shoved backward.
ReplyDeleteGakusei sees that his Charms are not doing the trick. Perhaps they will at least keep them away from the fight with Junzo. He picks up his spellbook and thumbs through the early chapter. Perhaps it is time to tip the scales in case of a real scuffle.
ReplyDeleteOOC: Quick study, spending 1 arcane reservoir to replace Charm Person with Enlarge Person. Full round action with AoO. Though I should be out of range... I'm hoping I won't need to cast this, but if a fight breaks out and its not 1 on 1, We'll make it 3 on Giant.
Hojo turns slightly toward Ogreface while drawing his sword. "You wish to run yourself upon my blade for this clown who is afraid to meet me in honorable combat?"
ReplyDeleteOOC: Readied action to strike Ogreface should he approach with the chair.
OOC2: sorry for the delayed response recently. The sale of our house was completed a week ago today and it has been a lot of work preparing for our move this weekend. Add to the fact that my entire family got sick last week and we've got a pretty solid excuse :/
Laughing Man is keeping his eyes on Takeru, who is slowly backing away. Ogreface -- who is aptly named -- starts to come around the southern side of the table, the chair held at the ready. He stops when Hojo addresses him, but then chuckles in a low voice. Behind Junzo (who is still waiting for the samurai to make a move), the old man is flipping through an old tome.
ReplyDeleteSuddenly, without warning, the large plaster mask sitting on the countertop rises into the air on its own. After reaching a height of about ten feet above the floor, its hollow eye-pits take on a baleful greenish glow. It slowly rotates in mid-air, gazing down at each occupant of the room. Only Ogreface, who has his back to it, does not see the display.
Hojo continues to focus on Ogreface as best as he can, but lets slip a simple "Fascinating".
ReplyDeleteTakeru is the exact opposite of the composed samurai. He falls to a knee, clutching the samurai's legs for safety. He screams and points to the hovering mask. "OH NO! It's it the avatar of Shizuru! She now casts her divine eyes on us after the slaying of the Empress and is come to slay all who are unworthy in her eyes! Do not slay me most noble Empress of Heaven! I am but merely come from the fields to wash away the field-dust and drown my unworthy pains! It is that one, the one with the chair! He refuses honorable combat with the samurai! Please content yourself with disembowling him! Feast upon his entrails and crush his eyes beneath your heel and let us unworthy souls go about our business once the unclean one has been slain!"
ReplyDeleteTakeru continues to drool and babble at the spectacle, but he maintains his grip on the sap, and keeps his other leg tight, ready to spring once Ogreface's attention is diverted. Secretly he gives thanks to his patron Yaezhing who surely favors him this day!
As the hovering demon's mask casts its emerald radiance over all, Takeru skitters across the floor towards the samurai and begins to blather on like a terrified peasant. Junzo and Laughing Man back away from the spectacle, but Ogreface refuses to fall for an obvious trick that clearly has tripped him up before.
ReplyDelete"Ha! Nice try!" he replies, "I may be ugly, but I wasn't born yesterday!" He lifts the chair over his head as though he wishes to hammer Hojo into the ground like a nail.
Suddenly, the glowing head opens its mouth and green tongues of flame begin to lick out. The paper mache is instantly consumed revealing a black horned skull wreathed in fire. A blast of green flame spills from the maw and sets the chair ablaze. Ogreface feels the searing heat and tosses the object to the floor some distance away. As the chair burns, it lights curtains next to the entrance.
OOC: Actions following this new development... everyone sees the demonic face now.
Looking up from his spellbook, Gakusei lays eyes on this new development.
ReplyDelete"My old bones, what is that!?"
Barely recognizing what he's doing he quickly re-casts his Detect Magic and studies this new development.
(OOC: My character is well traveled with alot of knowledge, not sure which one is more relevant but here's my knowledge roll and some possibilities,
woot! I rolled a nat 20!
Knowledge: Arcana 20 + 11 = 31
Knowledge: Planes 20 + 11 = 31
Knowledge: History 20 + 10 = 30
Knowledge: Religion 20 + 10 = 30
Based on what I learn, I'd do any of the following:
Immediate important information like combat stuff: Message whisper to Shiny Samurai (Hojo) relevant facts.
Relevant important facts or interesting facts: Speak them aloud and indicate the visage
Irrelevant but interesting facts: Speak them aloud as if giving a lecture
No facts known: Gah! why can't I remember?
)
Hojo attempts to stop the fire by either stomping out the fire or forcibly removing the curtains from the building. Any liquids on the nearby table may be of use here as well. The only words he gets out while fighting the fire are "Break that damn thing!"
ReplyDeleteThe samurai turns to rip the curtains down and stomp on them. Nobody seems much interested in the conflict anymore, only the frightful face that leers down upon the assembly (or the flames).
ReplyDeleteGakusei believes this thing to be a malevolent disembodied spirit that had briefly possessed the mask. He has never heard of one that behaved like this, however. Spitting tongues of green flame is outside the capabilities of such creatures, at least in his experience. They can be much more dangerous, usually, if they inhabit the skin of a living host. Then they are typically called oni.
Everyone turns to face the thing and backs away. That is, except Ogreface, who holds his ground while clutching his singed arm.
OOC: We went with your first option (Arcana), Gakusei -- since I assume you didn't roll four 20's -- but that was your best bet anyway.
Takeru keeps crouching, staying un-noticed. Quietly he re-holsters Summer's Sleep and draws Duty. Like iron springs, he tenses his legs, waiting for the right moment to attack the oni. Perhaps the thing will show it's true intentions. If it merely punishes the wicked, the thing may live another day. If it slays everything, then it will know conflict this day!
ReplyDelete(OOC: Yea I only rolled once, figured at a combat-esque pace I wouldn't have a few rounds of knowledge rolls. But if I can roll anymore, I'd gladly do it!)
ReplyDeleteTurning to his charmed 'friend' Ogre-face, "Son, turn and see this new evil, put down the weapon".
Now turning to the haunting guise of the spirit, he begins speaking in Infernal first:
(OOC: I'll speak until something interrupts me, like something bad happens to they attack, feel free to cut me off.)
"Oh lost one! I beseech you, cease your cleansing fires and tell us why you have come! On this auspicious night, at the beginning of the new solar year, we are celebrating new life and the changing energy from water to wood Xi. Can we help you embrace this new season of generation and life to bring you peace? Speak, and you shall find friends here.
This noble Samurai draws his steel to defend the meek and his lands, I know you can smell his noble blood. You know the truth in my words great being. Let us bring you peace."
During this speech, Gakusei begins his second round of magic study using Detect Magic from earlier to identify any lingering magic auras around the mask. Is this an illusion coupled with simple mage's fire? Perhaps a true disembodied Oni searching for a new host? The placement and behavior seems off, and knowledge will win this day.
As Hojo continues to battle the blaze, Gakusei attempts to delve deeper into the mystery of this new horror. Ogreface maintains his position -- whether from being transfixed, petrified, or simply unwilling to turn his back on a potential enemy-- but his comrades slowly back away. Takeru stays hidden behind some furniture & tries to make himself small.
ReplyDeleteWhen the old man addresses the flaming spirit directly, it turns its baleful green eyes in his direction. It slowly rotates in mid-air until it is hovering fifteen feet over the aged wizard. The thing cackles in an echoing voice such as one from a cold stone sepulcher and then says, "it is I who bring thee peace, withered fool... the peace of the GRAVE!" Upon uttering this last syllable, another blast of green flame pours forth from its unhinged mouth.
Meanwhile, some distance away, Morimoto has just disembarked from the ferry that has deposited him in The Reeds. He has paid the boatman, but now looks towards the labyrinth of streets yawning before him (many of which are dead-ends) and wonders where he can possibly begin his search to find the needles in this haystack.
Over the lingering sounds of revelry here and there, the minstrel can hear what might be screams. Wherever it may be coming from, and whoever is making the noises, it is quite a ways away. But in a few moments, he sees a group of citizens running in a panicked manner from one particular side street. There is smoke hanging in the air above the rooftops (likely from some fireworks display), and Morimoto notices that there is a sickening greenish radiance illuminating it from somewhere below.
OOC: Reflex save, Gakusei (and Junzo, too -- he's close enough -- but I'll handle that).
Morimoto -- Perception and/or Knowledge (local), if you have any (or a straight Int check, failing that).
OOC: Knowledge (Local) roll: 13 + 6 = 19.
ReplyDeleteBIC: "Fire!" shouts the young bard above the din, his voice trained for such volumous pronouncements. In the pre-dawn gloam he turns to the dock and the fresh gathering of fishermen and other laborers preparing for the long work day.
"There's fire up the street - the docks are in peril! Fill your buckets and follow me - be quick this day or we may lose our means!" Morimoto lifts a deckwash pail from the nearest pier, dips it into the river, and hustles toward the source of the commotion and probable fire, hopeful to have persuaded several followers to do the same.
OOC: Some combination of Diplomacy and Bluff (bonus is the same): 8 + 8 = 16
OOC: 15 feet over the aged wizard. Is it 20 feet up then? And how tall is the ceiling? Before I was worried about wielding my Nodachi, now I might need to draw my longbow...
ReplyDeleteBIC: Seeing as how nobody moved to break the object, Hojo abandons the flame and heads for the source. As he races toward the object, he draws his (OOC: If I can reach the ceiling with my Naginata, that is what I draw, otherwise I move into position with clear line of sight for my longbow).
Morimoto can use his knowledge of the city streets around him to determine how to reach the blaze most quickly. He has spent enough time in The Reeds to have some grasp of its layout. He does his best to gather aid to join him in dousing the flames, but most folk are only concerned about getting away as rapidly as possible. One old fellow -- clearly roused from his sleep -- pokes his head out of his front door and, witnessing the clouds of smoke illuminated with unearthly light, says, "that is not fire! It is demoncraft!" Then he immediately disappears.
ReplyDeleteMorimoto turns the corner with his sloshing bucket and sees a long, crooked street (more like an alleyway, actually), and the building on the right side about ten doors down that is catching fire. From what he can see, it isn't terribly out of control yet (thanks to last night's rain). But the flames definitely do not appear natural. They are emerald green and do not behave in a conventional manner.
Inside the teahouse, Hojo reluctantly turns his back on the blaze so he can take his bow out of its case and draw an arrow from his quiver. He moves several feet closer and steps to his right so as to get as clear a shot as possible around the criss-crossing rafters overhead.
OOC: We need a few rolls yet, but we'll get to your action in a bit, Hojo.
OOC: I suspect moving and drawing was my full round, and it sounds like we've entered the combat phase, but if you are referring to rolls from me, I'll put some down. Attack with a bow: !!! 20+5=25, confirmation is 8+5=11...maybe not a crit. First damage roll at 1d8 = 5, I don't know if you just x3 for the crit, but extra rolls are: 7, 7. Crit for x3 = 15, for extra rolls = 19.
ReplyDeleteShocked at this baleful spirit, Gakusei attempts to feebly scramble out of the way.
ReplyDelete(Reflex 7 + 0 = 7). He quickly moves away from the spirit and behind the Shiny Samurai with the bow. Once behind, he sees that it must be time for the newly prepared spell after all. One simple gesture and a command word directed at Hojo begins Enlarge Person.
(OOC, sorry for the delay! This should be reflex, then move + standard action.)
OOC: Is there a big horse standing near the burning building?
ReplyDeleteAnother Local Knowledge roll to see if Moto is familiar with the burning building: 10+8. Maybe, but not enough picture the interior.
BIC: Morimoto shakes his head and drops his bucket. As he watches the last of the hysterical denizens stream past, he takes the short view, as he always does, never questioning the immediacy of an obviously great idea, nor taking the time to consider consequences. Even if he had, in this situation, he would have reached the same conclusion: Kitsune are no match for demoncraft, especially one without any weapons, armor, or equipment of any kind, and who also was more than a little drunk.
"Fight fire with fire..."
With all possible haste he sprints the rest of the way up the road, on his way picking two burning street oil lanterns from their hooks. Then, upon reaching the building, he smashes in the window with his elbow and throws the first lantern into the center of the room.
He throws the second lantern against the front doors. Then he runs around back and, seeing the door rightly swings inward, tips over a trash barrel in front of it to trip and slow down any would be escapee. Finally, he looks around quickly for anything he could use as a club and retreats into the shadows of the alley to ambush whoever comes out.
OOC: Here are some D20 dice rolls. Please apply them as necessary: 14, 11, 9, 15, 3
Takeru pasued, unsure what to do about the hovering spirit. But as the samurai attacks, Takeru feels as though he should follow suit. Since it is too high to be struck, he sheathes the blade and draws the sling.
ReplyDelete[attack rolls: 14+6= 20 dmg: 3+2 = 5]
Morimoto can see the sign above the front door depicting a green creature with a turtle shell dancing on its hind legs while liquid spills out of its concave head. The Dancing Kappa. He's passed by it before, but has never been inside. There are no horses anywhere to be seen, but he does find a lantern hanging unattended across the street. He races towards the object, hops up on a low stone wall beneath it, and plucks the lantern down from where it had been dangling.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, back inside, Gakusei's robes are badly singed, and he as well (4 fire dm.). He wants to run for cover behind the brave samurai, but it is too far to run (and he would need to pass right underneath the demonic creature). He ducks down behind a table instead and tries to cast a spell.
Both Takeru and Hojo get into advantageous positions for fire projectiles at the spirit. Both of them hit, and the ghastly floating head shudders at the impact. It spins about to face southeast and widens its maw as if to breathe forth another fiery blast upon its attackers. However, instead of exhaling, it strarts to suck inward. It looms over Ogreface and then descends upon the dumbfounded giant. The jaws open wide and seem to swallow Ogreface's head and arms that are raised protectively. But just as the head encloses its petrified victim, the skull appears to disintegrate in a burst of emerald fire. Ogreface does not burn, though he is doubled over in the wake of the attack.
When the huge man straightens upright again, he turns to glare at everyone in the room. His skin has turned a burnished gold, curving horns protrude from his forehead, and his eyes have grown to twice their former size. They are slits of bright green inside black orbs. He grins while showing a mouthful of fangs. His hands now end in wickedly curved talons.
OOC: Gakusei -- To cast, I need a Concentration check (in Pathfinder, d20 + CL + Int modifier) since you were injured this round.
Hojo drops his longbow where he stands, draws his Nodachi and closes the distance between himself and Skullface (formerly Ogreface).
ReplyDeleteTakeru follows the brave samurai's suit, discarding the sling and again drawing Duty. The ninja slides around, trying to gain a flanking advantage with the warrior.
ReplyDeleteReeling from his injury, he concentrates on his gestures and completes his spell (Concentration: 16+2+6=22), Gakusei releases a series of curses in various languages, ending with "Gah, there is no reckoning with some chaos spirits!".
ReplyDeleteHe waits to see how his Enlarge person will affect the battle, mentally preparing to cast his last spell as Enlarge again on another ally if it seems to be turing the tide against this oni.
Hojo and Takeru close with the golden-skinned creature with weapons drawn. Laughing Man backs away with his knife at the ready and Junzo flees towards a rear window and flings himself out. At the same time, the old wizard completes his spell: the young samurai suddenly feels as though he has floated up into the air! At 12 feet tall, his head nearly collides off a rafter above.
ReplyDeleteThough Ogreface (or whatever he is now) has to look up at his opponent, he does so fearlessly with talons ready to strike. Takeru attempts to come in closer from behind. At the same moment, the front window of the teahouse smashes inward and a lit oil lamp flies inside smashing against the floor. Most of the southern part of the room is either aflame or engulfed in foul smoke.
OOC: Hojo -- Your modifications are as follows: +2 size bonus to Strength, a –2 size penalty to Dexterity, and a –1 penalty on attack rolls and AC due to its increased size. You also have a space of 10 feet and a natural reach of 10 feet. Your nodachi inflicts 2d8 base damage.
Seeing the approaching flame Gakusei quickly casts Ray of Frost directed at the base of the flame to extinguish it. During the ensuing battle, he recasts this trivial spell at the base of flames within his range while moving to stay out of combat range. Hopefully this Shiny Samurai and the Sneaky One will take care of Skullface.
ReplyDeleteHojo is completely distracted and hardly notices the oil lamp, let alone the fleeing Junzo (so much for my challenge...). Something much worse than common thugs and street gang violence is here and must be destroyed. Hojo's blade comes crashing down from the rafters upon the demon.
ReplyDeleteOOC: Attack Roll -> 5+6 = 11 (boo), Damage -> (7+3)+7 = 17 (too bad I probably didn't hit...)
Gakusei attempts to get the blaze under control, but there seems little hope with what magical knowledge he possesses. The shattered lamp also begins to catch, but it is insignificant compared to the entire southwest wall being engulfed in emerald fire.
ReplyDeleteHojo refocuses on the new threat and brings his sword down upon the demonic foe. For the creature's size, it is quick, and it easily sidesteps the huge blade. It did not help that the weapon was slowed by having to split through one of the wooden beams above. As the sword rings against the hard polished floor, Takeru slinks up from behind.
With a mad, toothy grin, the monster slashes at Hojo. Golden claws slash through armor and then through flesh (12 dm. total from 2 hits). The samurai is hurt badly, but does not betray anything upon his face.
With little hope at extinguishing the fire, and no use in a fight, Gakusei takes the Withdraw action and attempts to re-position behind his more stalwart friends and away from the attacking Oni.
ReplyDeleteIn the interest of not dieing, Hojo withdraws. Hoping to take advantage of this enlarged state, he wields his Niginata in favor of his Nodachi. With any luck he can keep the Oni from getting closer than his 20 foot reach and continue living.
ReplyDeleteOOC: Jason, can you update the Map? What's the scale again?
ReplyDeleteThe creature does not pursue Hojo, but stands laughing with its claws dripping fresh blood. Its huge, bulging eyes are aflame with madness.
ReplyDelete"This was but your first test... I hope this is not all Kasai has to offer!"
OOC: The map is updated. Each square is five feet (and always will be for battlemaps, unless otherwise mentioned).
Ooc: hmm, only a 5ft step, I should have at least attacked...ahh well, perhaps it's better using the spear, presuming he is still there to hit.
ReplyDelete[ooc: I'm not sure the exact state of the positions, but if Hojo has an enlarged Naginata, that should give him a reach of about 20ft, so I'm gonna go ahead and guess that he still is threatening.]
ReplyDeleteTakeru doesn't like the tactical situation, but he senses that the situation is quickly sliding out of control. If he doesn't take a shot now, he might not get another one.
Sliding forward using the Leaf Step, Takeru advances opposite the samurai, and calmly slides his Wakazashi into the Oni's ribs.
[atk roll = 15 + 6 = 21. dmg = 1 + 2 + 5(sneak) = 8]
Takeru's weapon slices deep and draws forth blood from the suddenly inhuman opponent. It growls angrily, and spins about to face his assailant.
ReplyDeleteOOC: Now that the craziness has evolved into a straight battle, let's utilize an initiative order. Here it is...
1. Hojo (now has flank)
2. Takeru
3. Gakusei
4. "Ogreface"
(OOC: Based on the previous comments I'd like to take a double move action to B6 and exit the door.)
ReplyDeleteSeeing his attempt to get behind Hojo blocked, and still useless in a fight, he exits the battle and tries to help contain the blaze.
As Moto's attempt to drive the combatants out of the building succeeded only in creating the least consequential oil fire one could imagine, He will emerge from his hiding place, crack the door at D1, and peek through, club in hand.
ReplyDeleteIn the confusion & smoke (which now is beginning to billow out from the front of the building), Gakusei decides anything other than this is the better part of valor, and makes for the side door on the other side of the counter.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, outside, Morimoto has the opposite notion. He wants to get in to find out what in the hell is going on. Unfortunately, the entire front of the teahouse facing the street is quickly becoming engulfed in flame. It does not seem natural, especially after so much rain overnight. But what is natural about green flame?
Without a safe entrance in the front, he races as fast as he can around to the back. Once there, he sees a door and a glass covering the ground where a window was broken outward. Through the broken pane he glimpses the scene inside. Illuminated by hellish green light, there are three combatants: a man in plain clothes weilding a sword, a creature with gold skin & claws, and Hojo -- somehow he has grown twelve feet tall!
OOC: There may have been some confusion as to which doors went where, but no matter. Everybody is basically getting to where they want to go. Next round, Gakusei can be out of the main room, and Moto can enter the teahouse through the back.
The updated order:
1. Hojo
2. Morimoto
3. Takeru
4. Gakusei
5. "Ogreface"
Hojo may still act if he wishes. Then it's my turn...
OOC: I'm sorry, I thought it was Ogreface's turn...in that case:
ReplyDeleteBIC: taking a 5 foot step back to further distance himself from Ogreface, Hojo continues his assault, this time jabbing forward with the impossibly long naginata.
OOC: 8+6+2(flank)=16 to hit (maybe?) for 2d6+7 = 6+4+7 = 17 damage
Morimoto does the only thing he is equipped to do against such a menacing foe. From his gut emerges a clear sound, ringing loudly against the tumult in the hall.
ReplyDelete"Samurai warriors give it your all,
Fighting for honor, as victors, stand tall!"
OOC: Perform (Sing): Roll = 6 + 10 = 16
This was an attempt to Inspire Courage (+1 to hit and +1 dmg, +1 vs Fear or Charm)
Delete[ooc: Naturally! I feel inspired just reading it.]
ReplyDeleteTakeru continues his assault, crouched and weaving, taking advantage of the monstrous warrior twirling his tree-sized weapon, the ninja remains diametric to him, slashing out with his razor-sharp sword.
It occurs to him that he might shout battle-cries, to swear the blood upon his steel will never dry, to
stand and fight together beneath the metal sky...but such things waste breath and bring attention, and it is not his way.
[atk: 19(one short!) + 6 + 1 = 25. dmg = 4 + 2 + 5(sneak) + 1(inspire) = 12.]
Hojo has never felt the true pain of battle despite all his training. He was surprised how it has affected him, though he stepped back for a moment upon being wounded, when the beast spins about to attack Takeru, the young samurai finds his courage and lunges forward with his weapon. The blade gouges a grievous wound between his opponent's shoulder blades.
ReplyDeleteJust outside, Morimoto witnesses the terrible melee through the shattered window. He uses his minstrel song to help give Hojo some strength of spirit (1 rd. of bardic music used).
Takeru slashes again, now faced with his frightful foe...
OOC: Okay... both Hojo and Takeru cannot get the flank. The creature turned to face Takeru in an earlier post, so his hit is not a sneak attack. You are threatening a critical, however, so please roll to confirm (and another 1d6 just in case).
[ooc: Ugh, someday I may remember what critical hits are. :p]
ReplyDelete[crit: to hit: 19(okay, now the dice are just taunting me) + 6 + 1(inspire) + 2(flank, which I forgot before) = 28. dmg: 4 + 2 = 6.]
With Hojo's naginata still partially embedded into the creature's back, Takeru slashes deftly across his opponent's throat. Blood pours forth from the wound, causing long, wavy lines of crimson to spread down the oni's chest. No ordinary man could survive such an injury -- most, in fact, would be deprived of their head -- but the golden-skinned monster only grins wider. Despite its mirth, it coughs and more blood bubbles up out of its mouth. The red lines, that seemed like long tendrils of a jellyfish, are suddenly obliterated by globs of dark, glistening fluid.
ReplyDeleteThe creature staggers forward, disengaging itself from the samurai's weapon, and savagely swipes at Takeru with both claws. Both wicked talons cut cloth to ribbons & even scar boiled leather almost to the skin, but Takeru's honed reflexes just barely save him from grievous wounds.
Gakusei, meanwhile, darts behind the counter & yanks open the sliding door to the adjacent room. He sees a typical kitchen & workroom. Huddled against the far wall (behind a large worktable) are three people. There is an older man & woman with a teenaged girl between them. They all seem badly traumatized. There is one other exit from the room: a doorway leading north.
OOC: Rolled a 18 and 17, Wettengel -- can't get a much closer shave than that.
Back to the top of the order, round 2. Hojo is up.
(I assume I'm effectively out of combat so you can do my action in any order.)
ReplyDeleteNoticing the 3 against the far war, Gakusei shoots them a reassuring smile. Quickly gesturing up a Message spell he indicates the trio at the far wall and whispers, "Don't worry my friends. I created a Giant to fight the Demon for us. I'll stay here to make sure it doens't get out of control".
He smiles again and projects an air of confidence and control.
(OOC: Diplomacy check? 11 + 3 = 14)
"You are a wild animal that is out of control, I will kill you until you are dead from it!"
ReplyDeleteOOC: Attack 15 + 6 + 2 (flank) + 1 (inspire) = 24
Damage 2 + 6 + 7 + 1 (inspire) = 16
OOC: What's the state of the fires? Is the inside of the building engulfed in flames, magical or otherwise?
ReplyDeleteMoto maintains the inspirational tune.
"Unnatural creatue, your end is at hand.
Evil be vanquished, die where you stand!"
OOC: I believe I can maintain as a free action, so no roll needed, correct? Otherwise, roll of 10 +10 = 20.
With his full action, if there is a path to do so without either getting burned or getting into combat, Moto hurries through the doorway at D1, into the Tea House, and behind the bar. He has no weapons but may be able to make a molotov cocktail or two.
The man summons up enough courage to speak, "even if my teahouse is not destroyed in the battle, the Hitsugi Gumi will see to it once they get word of this incident. My family is ruined!" The proprietor has some trust for Gakusei, but clearly he has been shaken up by the night's events.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, back in the common room, Hojo buries the blade of his naginata into the shoulder of his opponent. Again, it is a blow that would easily kill an ordinary man, but the oni reamins standing. Takeru even thinks he notices that the slash he delivered just moments ago does not seem to be bleeding as it did a moment earlier. It is almost as if the thing is healing right before his eyes.
Though the ninja was nearly eviscerated by the creature's attack, there is a narrow opening thanks to the giant samurai's powerful blow.
OOC: Morimoto -- You are correct. Maintaining is a free action. Please be sure to keep track of how many rounds you have left for today. You may dash in through the back door & duck behind the counter. If you wish, you may have total cover. It is not like a bar in a tavern, however.
Takeru's eyes narrow at both the unbelievable fortitude of the demon-beast, and the iron-will and combat prowess of the samurai. Many are the men that would have turned and run by now, even were they 50 feet tall! Takeru will not shame the samurai's prowess by doing any less than matching his honor!
ReplyDeleteTakeru recovers from the Thousand-Leaves defence he had to use to save himself from the flesh-tearing talons. Though taunting was not taught in the Clan, he found that it occasionally seemed...apropriate.
[b]"Do you miss me because I am too quick for you? Or perhaps you are simply consumed with fear from the giant warrior? I had thought your kind to be beyond such mortal needs as fear and cowardice. Now I see that I am wrong. I would say that the bards shall sing of your failure, but that is happening already! Even now I hear songs of how you so willingly present your backside to an enemy! You are done here. At least die with honor."[/b]
Takeru follows his words with a slashing-dragon attack. 'Tis not seemly to talk aobut fighting without actually fighting.
[atk: 11 + 6 + 2 + 1 = 20. dmg = 6 + 2 + 5 +1 = 14.]
[ooc:W00t! Let's hear it for the Dodge skill! =-D]
Takeru is still talking when his blade slices through layers of gold scales and into his adversary's vulnerable tissue underneath. Still impaled upon Hojo's naginata, the creature does not fall back, but instead lifts it grinning, fanged mouth into the air as its limbs fall to its sides. Green flame erupts out of its mouth, and then out of its wounds in the shoulder and stomach. The display is blinding for a moment, but soon there is a dull thud, and when the heroes look up...
ReplyDelete...they see a large man covered in blood with terrible wounds across his throat, torso, back, and shoulder. It looks like he has been butchered. The form is barely recognizable.
Laughing Man comes walking slowly up to the grizzly scene splayed out on the floor. He looks down and says quietly, "Ogreface..."
OOC: Everybody gets 300 xp. Well done.
(OOC: w00t! Would the sound/sight of pitched battle ending be known to Gakusei? If so, I'd like to tell the family in the corner that the danger has passed, and then head back into the room to thank my saviors in the most Gakusei way possible.
ReplyDeleteHitsugi Gumi, Gakusei thinks to himself, I know I've heard that name before...
(OOC: Would like to roll a Knowledge here (Local, Nobility, History? which is most appropriate) to determine what/who that is and what I can do to help my favorite tea shop owner. Also, if I witnessed the end of the battle from the doorway, could I get a Knowledge roll (Arcana, History, Planes?) as to the nature of the Oni we just faced?)
Hojo is more relieved than excited. He works his weapon out of his opponents lifeless body, and takes in the scene of unnatural fire which surrounds him and his companions. He hesitates for a moment as it overwhelms him, considering how he could help to mitigate this disaster.
ReplyDeleteOOC: What is the nature of this unnatural fire? Does it seem to be spreading? Is it burning us or weakening the building? Is it getting weaker now that the Oni is defeated? Based on this I would either try to put the fire out itself, or instruct everyone to leave and use my large size to try and knock down the building to prevent the fire from spreading to the other nearby structures.
Morimoto also breathes a sigh of relief. He wasn't at all confident that his next move - singing the Oni song he learned as a child while throwing soybeans at the monster - would have worked at all.
ReplyDeleteOne more thing to do right away. He grabs towels to toss over the oil fire no one else here knows he started.
With the creature's defeat (or unmasking, which might be more appropriate), the unearthly green flames seem to have have lost much of their fury. As the eldritch fire erupted from the host's body, it swept up into the air with a fury. It took much of the blaze from the south wall with it and then dissipated. The front of the shop is still badly damaged, but at least there seems to be little chance the flames will spread. Morimoto & Hojo are able to get what remains under control.
ReplyDeleteSoon, the samurai returns to his former size and Gakusei emerges from the side room with the proprietor close behind him. The man is clearly devastated by the damage inflicted upon his property, but he manages to keep his composure. He has enough sense to know that it could've been much worse, and his family, at least, is unharmed.
Morimoto had the opportunity to become briefly acquainted with Hojo at the temple, but he does not recognize the fellow in drab commoner's garb, who is cleaning off the blade that ultimately slew the demon. The gin'yūshijin feels that he looks vaguely familiar, however... was he at the funeral? The three younger men have not been introduced to the older gentleman, but they can see that he is some sort of sorcerer.
OOC: All of you have heard of the Hitsugi Gumi. They are an organization that controls much of the outskirts of the city (including The Reeds). They act as both the crime and the law -- or at least, that is what most rumors seem to suggest.
Feel free to make further Local or Arcana rolls if you think they're appropriate.
With the flames out and the threat seemingly over, Hojo moves to address the body of Ogreface and (presumably) the grieving laughing man.
ReplyDelete"He was a brute looking for trouble, but I believe he found more than he could handle. His death was a result of this unnatural possession, and was both beyond his control and most unfortunate." Turning slightly to directly address Laughin Man, "you are a true friend. You did not flee when he was consumed, and you did not flee when he met his fate. Let us pay our respects to the memory of a person who was consumed and destroyed by an evil spirit, and let not fight any more this evening. Enough blood has been spilled."
At that last statement, Hojo becomes increasingly aware of the amount of his blood that has been spilled. He tries to find a more comfortable position on a chair until a better plan can be hatched. While the wounds are not yet life threatening, he is not accustomed to being wounded.
Approaching the triumphant warriors, "Wonderful! The giant and the shadow has slain the oni! You all shall find this old man in your debt."
ReplyDeleteGakusei takes a brief bow and begins to address them as a professor on the first day of class.
"My new friends, I am Kyoshō Gakusei. A master Arcanist, scholar, and advisor to our empress. I find myself in your service." Gakusei bows again briefly.
Gakusei now turns to address the Laughing man (who is no doubt no longer laughing) and Junzo, both of whom should still be under his Charm Person spell. "The tragedy of this Oni possession is indeed horrific. You have my new friends to thank for your new-found and ongoing safety. I'm certain the Hitsugi Gumi will be glad to hear of your rescue by these brave warriors."
(OOC:
Going to try a Knowledge: Local to learn more than the common knowledge on the Gang.
13 + 10 = 23
Things I'd like to know: Power structure (hierarchical, distributed, or decentralized), major players (names of those in the leadership), likely position of these thugs, protocols that only members would know, and anything valuable to save my shopkeeper friend some grief.
I'm also rather shocked at the Oni possession. Unless this is a dead end, I'd like to try Knowledge rolls on this Oni. Things I'd like to know: how common are these possessions, when was the last recorded possession here, what is the common cause of such possession (mayhem chaotic evil, as part of a vendetta neutral evil, or part of a pact or plan lawful evil). If its not just general mayhem, why was this tea shop targeted and who was the target?)
)
OOC: Can I assume that Morimoto and Gaksui are acquainted through the Empress? If so, Moto takes him aside and quietly fills him in on the events of the evening. If Moto trusts Gaksui, he reveals the true state of the Empress' health - everything short of the ruse.
ReplyDeleteMorimoto has heard of Gakusei, but knows only the vaguest bits of information. He would've expected a grand wizard of truly magnificent power, if the stories he's heard are to be believed. Though seemingly helpful in the conflict, this old man seems like a minor street magician, little more. Perhaps it is a different Gakusei he's heard of.
ReplyDeleteLaughing Man (whose name by now is an ironic one) stands quietly by his fallen comrade. He seems quite shaken by the whole ordeal. Junzo was never affected by the enchantment, and he fled before Morimoto arrived. More than likely, Junzo is a "big brother" in the Hitsugi Gumi, while his two associates are "little brothers." The Hitsugi Gumi is a highly organized syndicate with a strict hierarchal structure.
With the city's resources being stretched incredibly thin since Ameiko took power, it is believed that the empress allowed the outer districts police themselves. Despite their nefarious reputation, the Hitsugi Gumi probably keeps order in the outskirts better than the city guard ever could. Their methods are not always the most scrupulous, however.
OOC: Morimoto -- Feel free to summarize what you actually say to Gakusei so as to not sow any confusion. He'll know what you personally reveal to him. What he is able to tell you largely depends on what you tell him.
Gakusei -- You may attempt an Arcana roll to recall more information on the oni.
OOC: Moto will have a number of actions here, so allocate in turn, or when appropriate.
ReplyDeleteFirst, Cure Light Wounds on Hojo: If I am required to roll for the attempt, I'll just take 20. Result = 4 +1 = 5 HP. Moto feels strongly he can trust the samurai. The others, not so much. Since the young bard did not see how the altercation started, he does not know if laughing manis with the group or not, but given the way it played out, can only assume he is not the enemy. Still, care must be taken with how to proceed.
OOC: Motot has perform (Sing), but not acting or some kind of stage performance. Can I use CHA bonus to affect a storytelling? Everything that comes next is part of that performance, the goal of which is to supply mis-information to those who would use it against the Empress, furthering her intended ruse. Those who know the truth will see through the act.
First, to laughing man: "I don't know you. but what has transpired here is proof at least that you are not my adversary. I suggest you leave, but if you choose to stay here now, you may endanger yourself further - I can make no assurance to the contrary." Moto wait's his gaze fierce for one of such small stature.
Intimidate roll: 2+4 = 6
If laughing man does not leave, he follows with, "Very well. What you learn now may seal your fate with the gods."
Next to Gakusei: "Old friend, it is by a divine hand that we are united this night. Alas, I wish it were under less dire circumstances. The oni is a portent, for now the gods make their moves in the wake of the Empress' demise. Still, I am glad to see your face." I assume, as close as Moto was to the Empress, that even if he is not more familiar with the mage, the mage knows of him. Moto checks the expressions of the others when he reveals the state of the Empress.
Perception roll: 16+5 = 21
Finally, to the commoner: "You were there tonight, at the scene of the Empress' assasination. But you were not the murderer, or the samurai and I would already be dead. You fight at our sides. No assassin would willfully put himself in such perilous circumstance. But then, why were you at the cemetery, and why are you here now?"
So much for Intimidate. Moto's "fierce gaze" is comical, if anything. Maybe that will get laughing man laughing again.
DeleteUpon seeing a familiar face, Gakusei's eyes widen and a larger smile grows over his face."Aha! It is your honeyed voice that I recognized!" His expression now turns somber has he remembers the empress.
ReplyDelete"I have indeed heard of her demise, and with her passing, I have lost a great piece of my heart. She believed me, and kept my counsel even after my powers were diminished by treachery. If I could only remember more than these children's spells, I would have rescued her spirit long ago from the afterworld."
Lost in brief contemplation as tears begin to show in the old man's eyes he overhears Moto's last comment and briefly says, "Morimoto, you do not know this moving Shadow Man? I had assumed he and the Shiny Armor now followed with you."
(OOC: Knowledge Arcana roll: 4 + 11 = 15 ouch! Well I know a bit more than the basics!)
Takeru sheathes Honor and, as Mori finishes telling Laughing Man the he can stay or go, comes up behind him and points briefly to Laughing Man, saying, "Do not leave" as a definitive fact.
ReplyDeleteThen taking up the quesiton, he answers, "Hai. I am Taerku, and it was my duty to see that she did not die. As I have failed in that, I must find her killers, else my own life is forfeit. I beleive the assassin has ties to the Hitsugi Gumi, and as THIS one is the only one I may now question, his words will have value to me. But first, there is one that we must see if he has anything useful to tell us."
Takeru bends down and gives Ogreface's corpse a thorough check. Of greatest importance would be his tatoos, as in, he sees if any are similar, or at least referencial, to the ones he saw on the assassin.

Hojo simply watches and listens. He is near Ogreface and the laughing man, appearing to show respect for the fallen man, but concentrating more on preventing laughing man from leaving.
ReplyDeleteOOC: ready action to stop laughing man should he attempt escape.
When at first Laughing Man is bid to leave, he does not bolt for the door, but slowly rises after gazing at his former comrade's blood-splattered face. As Takeru commands him to stay, he mumbles, "Nobuo." One cannot say if he is referring to himself or the dead man.
ReplyDeleteMorimoto eases some of the samurai's wounds and then engages in conversation with the old wizard. The minstrel tries to gauge the listener's reactions when he speaks of the empress.
Gakusei has not had much experience with oni -- at least not since Ameiko took the throne -- as they are among the rarest of creatures. Kami (guardian spirits) who have been stripped of their physical forms due to being punished by the gods roam the world as bodiless oni. They long to take possession of a physical form to taste the sins of flesh once again.
Takeru kneels by the bloodied body of Ogreface and tries to examine his tattoos. Much of his body is coated in blood, but one thing is evident immediately: the empress' attacker has many more than this man. As far as any similarity between the two, it is impossible to say without much more detailed study. The designs are quite elaborate.
OOC: If anyone wishes to disguise their facial expressions, I'll need an opposed Bluff to Morimoto's Perception.
OOC: Bluff (more to prevent from betraying my knowledge to Gakusei and Laughing Man) 17+4=21
ReplyDeleteNow, time to try and engage this laughing man in conversation while the others seem preoccupied.
BIC: My friend, it is a bad evening indeed when one must slay his own countrymen. I came in here this evening to prevent violence, but things took a strange turn. Is this Nobuo who lays before us? May his spirit find its way to Takama-ga-hara.
(If there is no response, I shall continue) I am impressed you did not flee, even when your leader did. He has no respect for his companions, but you are an honorable man, and I would prefer you by my side than that coward. Nobuo was lucky to have a friend such as yourself. We should raise a glass in his name.
The man looks up at Hojo and nods. "I am Tetsu," he says finally. "I do not know if it was honor that rooted my feet to the ground. Or courage. Probably neither. Junzo would probably say that I was too stupid to run when I should. And I would laugh. I would always laugh at whatever they say. Now Junzo probably thinks I am dead, and he will tell the Hitsugi Gumi the same."
ReplyDeleteHe clenches his jaw and bows to the samurai. "I am a simple man, but I am in your debt. I would like the Hitsugi Gumi to go on thinking I am dead, but I will do a service for you. You need only ask."
OOC: Good role-playing, Kaster.
Takeru would frown, if such knee-jerk tells had not been long banished from his behavior at the fists of masters. He had hoped at least to get some clue as to the link of the assassin and the gang, but it seems that dead men can be quite silent on the matter.
ReplyDeleteHe gives his attention as the samurai seems to be making good headway with the living man. He walks over to them.
[b]"It seems you have earned a service, noble samurai. Perhaps we can use this small pebble to start an avalanche. Could you ask your new-found footman if he would know aught of the Hitsugi Gumi's involvement with either skilled assassins, or it's dalliance with ninja clans? Any things that he knows would prove to be of more knowledge than that which we currently hold, as our only lead know lays dead on the ground. Me thinks that perhaps he knew much, 'fore it takes a soul of some weight to attract the attention of Oni."
"Tell your friend," Tetsu says to Hojo, while furrowing his brow at Takeru, "that while I am but a 'little brother' in the syndicate, I know that the Hitsugi Gumi does not dirty their hands with the ninja -- or at least they haven't for many years. They had a deal go bad a long time ago, I guess. If they need someone dead, they prefer to handle it in-house. Our best is Tanaka Mitsuya, or was. He hasn't been seen around here for quite some time. Seemed to just up and disappear months ago."
ReplyDeleteThe fire is mostly out now, but there is a glow of a different kind just peeking over the city rooftops to the east.
"If we're going to speak more about this, I recommend we find a place far from here to do it. The fire is sure to attract plenty of attention. Something you may not want. I certainly don't."
"I agree, to linger would be a bad idea. Do you know where your friend would like to lie to rest? Otherwise I could suggest the temple. I have a friend there that will both see to it he is respected, as well as tend to our wounds. In exchange for your cooperation, I will see to it that you have a means to escape this city and live out your life elsewhere."
ReplyDeleteAs we make preparations I will call Taiki. I might also try and change my armor so I do not stand out quite so much.
Takeru nods, satisfied at the warrior's suggestion. "The temple is a fine place. Both open and secluded."
ReplyDeleteHe calls out to the other two survivors. "Since you two have so gallantly braved the fires of the oni, would you wish to accompany us and refresh yourselves at the temple? There we can talk more and perhaps hash out the cause of these most unusual events."
Gakusei listening intently to the conversation quickly adds, "I'd be glad to accompany you, my friend. Let me just grab my book."
ReplyDeleteHe quickly scoops up his spellbook and prepares to leave.
"I will meet you there before the sun reaches the zenith. I need to return to the Palace first." Moto splashes some water on his face, re-ties his hair back, and then makes all possible speed along the most direct route back to the Palace.
ReplyDelete"Oh, unless anyone wants to come with me. I would welcome the protec-- err, company."
ReplyDeleteAs the morning sun begins to rise, the company that fate has hastily assembled prepares to leave for more discreet accommodations. The street out front is already swarming with gawkers (a crowd which no doubt will include agents or pawns of the Hitsugi Gumi). So back alleys are utilized for the departure. Under the circumstances, little can be done for the teahouse proprietor and the dead man, but other arrangements might be made at a later time. Even with all the damage, the owner realizes that things might've been much worse.
ReplyDeleteThe five travelers are able to breathe much easier once they have left The Reeds and enter the city proper. Here the syndicate has far less power and the group may move about much more openly. Soon after they leave the outskirts, however, they must part ways. Morimoto continues east, while the others turn south to head for the temple.
OOC: Well, it didn't take long to split the party again. Those of you heading for the Temple of the Sun's Blade (most of you, I think), may proceed to that thread to post. I will create an area for the scene at the imperial palace shortly.
